Let’s answer the main question first and get the biggest hurdle out of the way. Do you need experience for drum lessons? No. You don’t need to know rudiments. You don’t need to read music. You don’t need to already have a beat in your back pocket. None of that is a prerequisite for lesson one. It’s the point of lesson one.
Nobody expects you to walk out of your first drum lesson and play at Golden 1 Center on your way home.
If you already knew how to play, you wouldn’t be booking a lesson. You’d be booking a tour bus! Starting from zero isn’t a problem to apologize for. It’s just… starting.
What you actually need is curiosity and a willingness to sit down and try something new. Grip, coordination, timing, vocabulary — all of that gets built one lesson at a time, it is not delivered as a prerequisite.
Before we build any of that, though, I want to know something more important than your skill level: who you are as a person who wants to play drums. That’s coming up, in the meantime: As your drum teacher I want to know about you, care to learn about me?
