How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Session Drummer?

If you’re working on a recording and need real drums, you’re probably wondering:

What’s this going to cost me?

There’s no universal session-drummer price because no two recording projects are exactly alike.

What Determines the Price?

Several factors can affect the cost of hiring a session drummer:

  • Number of songs
  • Complexity of the music
  • Preparation required
  • Length of the session
  • Studio vs. remote recording
  • Number of takes or revisions
  • Travel requirements
  • Turnaround time
  • File and track requirements

Recording one straightforward song is a very different project from recording drums for an entire album.

Don’t Shop on Price Alone

The cheapest drummer isn’t necessarily the least expensive drummer.

If someone requires endless takes, arrives unprepared, can’t play to a click, doesn’t understand the style, or gives you tracks you can’t use, that inexpensive session can become very expensive.

Experience matters.

A professional session drummer should be able to understand what you’re trying to accomplish and efficiently give you performances that work.

Give the Drummer Information Up Front

When asking for a quote, tell the drummer:

How many songs you have.
What style of music you’re recording.
Whether demos are available.
Whether you have finished arrangements.
Your timeline.
Where/how the recording will take place.
What files or deliverables you need.

The more information you provide, the easier it is to give you an accurate quote.

Let’s Talk About Your Project

I approach session rates based on the needs of the individual project rather than trying to force every artist into the same package.

Tell me what you’re recording and what you need.
