If you’re planning a wedding band, a church event, a brewery gig, or a one-off show, you’ve probably wondered what a live drummer costs in Sacramento. 1. Performance length
The most obvious factor is how long I am performing. A 60-minute set is a different commitment than a four-hour reception, and my tiers reflect that. Load-in, setup, and tear-down happen around every performance, so even a short show takes more of the day than the time on stage.
2. Number of songs
Ten songs I already know is very different from 25 I’ve never played. Every new song has to be learned, the arrangement understood, and the feel matched to the way you play it. Share your set list early. A big list of new material for example can push a show into a higher tier.
3. Preparation
Preparation is the hidden part of any quote. It can include:
- Listening to recordings and charting songs
- Learning specific fills, breaks, and endings
- Practicing tempo changes and transitions
- Working with a click track, if your show uses one
If you can supply recordings, charts, or tempo notes, you may reduce prep time and cost.
4. Rehearsals
Rehearsals are $50 each and cover up to 90 minutes. Sessions that run longer add $25 for each additional 30 minutes. Mileage fees apply based on distance (see the mileage table above).
Ask up front how many rehearsals your show needs. A tight, experienced band may need only one. A newly formed group or a complex set list may need several, and each one adds to the total cost.
5. Travel
Sacramento is spread out, and gigs often are too. A show in Midtown is not the same as one in Folsom, Davis, Roseville, or Lake Tahoe. Shows follow the same mileage fees as rehearsals: nothing within 30 miles, $20 for 31 to 75 miles, and individual quotes beyond that. Extras like parking or lodging for overnight events are quoted separately. Tell me the exact venue address when you ask for a quote.
6. Equipment
I usually bring my own kit, which is a substantial piece of equipment to own, maintain, and transport. Specialty gear, such as electronic pads, percussion, or a specific kit size, can change the quote. Some venues call for a compact or quiet setup, and that changes what I bring to the gig.
7. Backline
“Backline” means gear provided at the venue or by the event, such as a house drum kit. If a full kit is provided, I may only need to bring sticks, cymbals, and a pedal, and the quote can drop. House kits vary widely in quality, so ask:
- What’s included: kick, snare, toms, cymbals, hardware?
- Can I check the kit ahead of time?
- Is the kit shared with other acts?
If the backline isn’t dependable, I’ll bring my own gear, and the price reflects that.
8. Soundcheck
Soundcheck takes time, and it’s often the least-appreciated cost. I usually need to arrive early to load in, set up, tune, and dial in levels. Early call times, long soundchecks, and multi-act events can add hours to the booking and are reflected in the rate.
9. Last-minute notice
Short notice raises the price because it means turning down other work and compressing preparation into a day or two. Several weeks of lead time gives you the best price and the best preparation. Same-week requests may not be possible, especially during peak wedding and festival seasons.
