Yes, You May Actually Play a Beat — Rudiments and Reading Music Explained

Did I mention, You May Actually Play Your First Drum Beat

This is usually where a first lesson turns a corner. We start with simple coordination exercises — right hand here, left hand there, foot on the pedal — and it doesn’t take long before those separate pieces start sounding like an actual groove. Your first drum beat doesn’t need to be complicated to feel exciting. Honestly, the simplest grooves usually feel the best, because you can actually keep them going.

That “wait, I’m playing a beat” moment is one of my favorite parts of this job. It’s proof this is learnable, and proof it didn’t take months to get there. Honestly 98% of my students can play a drum beat after the first lesson. The 2% that couldn’t, they didn’t show up for the lesson.

What About Drum Rudiments?

Rudiments have a reputation problem. On paper, they look like dry, repetitive exercises — the drumming equivalent of eating your vegetables. But think of them as building blocks instead. A single stroke roll. A paradiddle. A flam. Small patterns that show up later inside real fills, real grooves, real songs. You’re not practicing them in a vacuum forever. You’re banking pieces you’ll use.

Do You Need to Know How to Read Music?

No. Not before your first lesson, and not for a while after. We build by ear and by feel first. As you progress, basic rhythmic notation becomes genuinely useful — a shorthand for talking about what you’re playing and a faster way to pick up new patterns. It’s something we add once it earns its place, not something you need walking in the door.

Once you’ve got a beat and a little vocabulary going, the practical questions come next: What to Bring — and What Happens After.
